This heart-warming story follows Rachel on her Birth Day. The difference is that this is not an anniversary but the actual day of her birth. Rachel, portrayed as a little girl, is in heaven waiting to be born.
Rachel's problem is that she doesn't know how to get to her new family on earth. Grandmother Angel is too busy tending to the little souls to assist her. Rachel can't find Michael Sonlight, the Paradise Storyteller, to ask for help. Feeling lost and lonely, and knowing she is keeping her parents waiting, Rachel cries, an unusual sound in heaven. Reminded to find her guardian angel Teresa, Rachel runs off to the Angel Academy. Teresa tells her the simple secret-follow the golden cord, the one connected to her heart, it leads right to the heart of her mother. Rachel tugs and finds her way to her mother.
A professionally printed hardcover book, with vivid illustrations by "Computer Folk Artist" Cremeans, this book is both dreamy and winsome. Tiller and Cremeans play off each other's creativity as they invent heaven’s cast of characters such as Hugh, one of Heaven's Gatekeepers. He looks like he's probably one of their fathers with a fishing hat stuck full of flies. Cremeans presents everyday objects with a twist, entertaining both adult and child. A well-known coffee logo becomes Celestial Coffee and heaven is adorned with pink flamingoes and juggling clowns.
The narration, supported with convincing dialogue and a clear conflict, echoes a child's voice. The story alone might sound too lofty and preachy but combined with the big-eyed illustrations, becomes accessible, making it more meaningful. Fleshing out a concept many people believe in (or would like to believe in) Tiller's strength is in his matter-of-fact approach to a magical theme.
